Be aware of learning curve and system requirements. December 15, 2009 Jim 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
I came to the Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 & Adobe Premiere Elements 8 software bundle from version 7 of the same bundle. I therefore knew that editing video with Premiere Elements demands a great deal of a computer, and I now have a computer that is up to the challenge, that being an HP Pavilion Elite e9280t with Windows 7 Home Premium, 9GB RAM, an Intel Core i7-920 processor, a 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT220 graphics card, plenty of hard drive and backup hard drive space, etc. I've had no problems at all running the Elements bundle on this computer. My system exceeds the requirements listed on the box the software comes in, but every reviewer of the software whose review I've read says that Adobe's recommended system requirements are woefully inadequate to run the software.
It also helps that in addition to studying Adobe's Classroom in a Book Collection for the Elements 7 suite, I've worked with The Muvipix dot com Guide to Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements 7 by Steve Grisetti (a version for Elements 8 is now available). In addition, I've done a lot of reading at both the Adobe site for the software as well as at the Muvipix dot com site - I'm registered as a free guest at each site. I can honestly say that if it weren't for the Muvipix site and book, I think I would find using Premiere Elements an overwhelmingly frustrating experience. (At present, the Muvipix community board has a set of free training tutorial videos for Premiere Elements 8 which can be downloaded or viewed online. The videos are basic but include some helpful tips.)
One immensely helpful tip I picked up from the Muvipix book and site is to convert HD (High Definition) video from my camcorders to DV-AVI (Digital Video-Audio Video Initerleave) before using the files in Premiere (using a conversion utility such as MPEG Streamclip). Steve Grisetti says, and in my experience with both Premiere 7 and 8 it's true, that things go the smoothest in Premiere when working with files that have been converted to DV-AVI. In my experience, just hooking up a hard- or flash-drive camcorder to the computer and downloading files directly into Premiere, can sometimes lead to needless (and for me confusing) complications.
I've begun to work with video footage shot against a green screen, and Premiere makes it easy to do this (and the Muvipix guide made it easy for me to figure out how to work with green screen footage in Premiere), and I am very happy with the results.
As for Photoshop Elements 8, I find it very easy and nearly intuitive to work with (as was my experience with version 7). My digital photo editing needs are simple and basic. I want to be able to organize my photos and do some basic editing, including cropping and resizing. My digital video editing needs are more than basic, as I like to make simple movies with soundtracks and sometimes special effects (such as the use of green screen). But I am a hobbyist rather than a professional, and Premiere Elements 8 gives me a lot of room to grow.
I think this suite may be more than what some consumer level users need. I have a friend who I would not recommend this suite to, simply because I know that she does not have the time to learn to use it, and although the software is intuitive up to a point, there really is a learning curve involved. (Plus, I know that my friend does not yet have a computer adequate to run the software smoothly.) I would recommend this suite to the consumer or prosumer who is closer to the consumer rather than the professional end of the continuum, who has a sufficiently powerful computer and who understands that learning to use the software, particularly Premiere Elements, requires time and effort.
Very Powerful Software - Especially for the Price ... March 27, 2010 Bobbie - "Andromeda's Grandma" (United States) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RKN5V1TK9Z5KE Last summer, I began using Audiovisuals inside of the church. I began by using Windows Movie maker, and several months ago advanced to using Corel X2. This gave me some background experience in creating and using videos, so, I was very excited to have the opportunity to try out Photoshop & Premiere Elements 8.
Photoshop Elements 8 is AWESOME. I first learned Photoshop around 15 years ago and haven't updated for at least 4 years ... so this particular version far exceeded my expectations and was much easier to use than the other software I was using for photo-editing. To give it a good shakedown, I copied and merged people from three different photos into a single "group setting." I fixed their red-eyes, I resized the photos, and I was glad to be able to resize them within the windows as well, since it's always hard to be precise until you see everyone together. It was more intuitive and easier to use than ever - I also noticed that the magnetic lasso tool was extremely sensitive and worked very well.
My favorite feature in the newer software (it was introduced in Elements 7) is Guided Editing. Both it and the smart tools really do make it easy for nonprofessionals to get professional results.
Since I am familiar with Photoshop from the past, there was no learning curve at all, and I was able to jump in and use it.
Secondly - I tried Photoshop Premiere Elements 8. It too worked beautifully.
I am using an HP Pavilion Entertainment Laptop PC with a dual core processor, 2.1 GHz and 4.0 G RAM, using Vista 64. I made sure that I had the most recent update to ensure that the early problems were overcome.
I tested the software using a 4 minute video clip and an added audio file. When I couldn't figure out how to place a title over a scene, I clicked help, and immediately was directed to a video showing exactly how to create the title, so my test run included three levels - video clip, audio file, and titles. It worked well with no problems and I was satisfied with the final rendering of the file.
After a couple of afternoons of "learning" in Adobe Elements, I created the above video of my granddaughter, as well as a separate 3-minute video by hand, using a combination of video clips and photos with a music overlay. I had no problems, either with the learning process (very intuitive) or with my computer supporting the program.
Why am I so excited about Premiere? And why did I give it Five stars?
1) Only Adobe will accept BOTH WMV and MOV files ... and only Adobe will produce video files into both formats. Since I move between a Mac & Windows, this is a lifesaver and allows me to use ALL of my video formats in creating audiovisuals.
2) Adobe has many features that I really appreciate, including:
The instant movie maker - where it will take several of your video clips and make them into a movie, including cutouts.
The movie clip fixer (fixes the jiggles in your camera)
Cropping the image size of the movie clips
3) While some of the features are new, I found it much easier to learn than Corel - and especially appreciated the learning tutorials available for the software to maximize use.
4) Adobe includes a free 2GB space and a unique URL with your name so that you can post your "works of art" and show them to your family. While I've been using Picassa, having this available directly from the program saves several steps.
CAUTIONS:
1) If you have not updated your software, make sure that you do so. The recent fixes from Adobe have resolved some problems with video cards, although NVIDIA cards require an update directly from the Nvidia site. I had no problem on my computer.
2) Movie software takes a lot of memory - and rendering movies takes time. If you are using a laptop or a cheaper computer, you may want to check to see if this software is recommended for your computer. The MINIMUM RAM for converting Movies is 3G.
In this world of "instant," it's hard sometimes to realize the immense job that movie makers are doing in the background. Rendering movies takes time, and even with my small jobs I often start the process just before I need to do something else, so that I'm not stuck waiting for the computer to catch up.
As long as I am working in Windows, I WILL be using Premiere as my primary movie-making software - and I am grateful to be able to recommend it to others.

First of all, the more I use Adobe Premiere Elements, the more I enjoy it. While it has "crashed" a couple of times, both saving regularly and the autosave feature have prevented any major difficulties. One tip I learned recently was that it moves much faster if I use a different program to convert the video to AVI format before I import it into Premiere.
Secondly, I have learned a great deal with Learn Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Adobe Premiere Elements 8 by Video (Learn by Video). By going through these videos, I was able to significantly improve not only my technical expertise, but also my enjoyment.
One key area that I was avoiding was the "Organizer" feature. Not only does this feature allow you to organize your photos into projects, but it also permits you to edit photographs directly, saving both the original and the edited copy.
Meets my expectations August 29, 2010 Tom After reading all the negative reviews here I was tempted not to purchase this software and upgrade my Paintshop Pro instead. After downloading and trying all four software package trials, I decided I liked Elements 8 the best.
I don't have problems with crashes. It does say something from time to time about my graphics card but I haven't noticed any detrimental effects from the notice. I'm using this software on an I5 430 laptop with 4GB of memory and 128mb of integrated video. Like I said, no problems. Video conversion is a little time consuming but that's expected.
I'm going to have a learning curve as the layout is different than what I'm used to with PSP but nothing that can't be learned. As a web developer and not a photo buff, I feel Elements has more useful features than PSP. I think it handles gradients better without leaving bands. It also extracts foreground images better (but I might have done better if I took more time and effort - I don't know).
I wish I could disable the whole photo collection part of this software and just use it for editing. I know where my images are and how to find them. Some people might like this feature but I find it annoying.
Found out I had to wait 5 days for my free shipping to actually be shipped, and then wait another week or two. I realize it is considered free shipping but a 5 day handling time to ship a 1 product order is ridiculous. The only reason I didn't cancel the order and opted to upgrade to 2nd day air is because Amazon had the lowest price by $[...] after rebate. That was nice.
Great product August 29, 2010 Linda Hasselbach (JACKSONVILLE, FL, US) Photoshop Elements is great. Options for customizing my pics is limited only by my imagination. Although if you haven't used similar software in the past, I recommend taking a class or getting Photoshop for Dummies to get you started. I haven't had a chance to work much with Premier but so far it's great too!
Mini Photoshop/Premier for the win. April 15, 2010 Gavin Scott (Sunnyvale, CA United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
For most people the Elements version will do everything you need for photo manipulation, and it's not as "dumbed down" as Adobe's earlier attempts to sell a "consumer" version of their products.
Another advantage is that there's an upgrade to full Photoshop that gets you back the price of Elements, so you can always decide later that you want the full thing.
Still the gold standard in image manipulation.
